Alia_801's Maximus Character Study

Maximus is the character at the heart of the movie Gladiator. He is the General who becomes a slave, the slave who becomes a gladiator and the Gladiator who defies an emperor. But there is so much more to him than that. I felt a need to investigate the character further, and to show, in some small way, my appreciation of this film.

After 4 months of work, the study was finally completed. What follows are my musings and thoughts about the film. Mostly my own impressions, though some follow from discussions with other fans, by email, in person and on the (now defunct) Dreamworks SKG Fansite Bulletin Board and ezboard Gladiator Discussion Forum. I give my deepest thanks to everyone who has been so supportive as I wrote this, giving me feedback and encouragement. I can by no means acknowledge everyone, but I want to give my special thanks to: Aurelia, Bradamante, Isis, Daisy, Kwannom, RomaVicta, DianeB, Edvarda, bingley_r, bill, jen, Rey . Most of all, I want to thank Roheryn - she's been there for me all the time I've been working on this project. Thank you all so, so much! I've never done anything like this before, and certainly never anything so long. (My day job is being a research assistant at the Open University - I work in the Astrophysics group!).

I know several people have printed out copies of this work, so now it's finished I've designed a cover page to go with it. You can get it here: Cover page.

Any comments, constructive criticism or reports of typos/inaccuracies are very welcome - please let me know by emailing me at alia - 801 [at] planet - save . com (take out the brackets and spaces) . (I'm always glad to hear from new people, and make new friends around the world, so if you feel like dropping an email to chat about Gladiator or anything else, please feel free!)

This study is in no way meant to infringe on the copyright of the film, and is for no commercial purpose. It is meant purely to express my interpretation of the character of Maximus, a man who I have come to admire, respect and love as much as any of his soldiers, fellow gladiators or fans in the film.

This work is dedicated both to all the members of the Dreamworks SKG Fansite Bulletin Board, and the newer ezBoard Discussion Forum who have become a family to me, and to the cast and crew of the movie that has affected and changed so many lives.

Legionnaires, I salute you all.

Strength and Honour.
